In the years since then the community has established a strong reputation with its beautiful, well maintained landscaping and proximity to top rated schools, shopping, amenities and much more.

The Viera lifestyle is enjoyed by people of all ages. Families with young children appreciate a great school system, recreational amenities and more. Active retirees love living in the dozen cozy neighborhoods that border the Viera East Golf Club. Everyone enjoys the great shopping, high quality medical care services and houses of worship which are all within just minutes of home.

The Florida Association of Realtors awarded Viera the ENVY Award for balancing residential developments with the existing natural environment. Visit the community’s recreational trail system and you will see why! It’s no surprise that former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles declared the Viera trail system to be an official “Florida Greenway” with its conservation areas, natural environment and open spaces. Charming creatures such as the gopher tortoise and scrub jay are right at home by the lakes which the trail winds around.

Manatee Elementary has a “kindness project” to reduce bullying and teasing among their 850 students. Students draw names and write a compliment to that person on a strip of colored paper. The compliments will be strung together and used a holiday decorations in December. Manatee PTO president and campaign founder Nicki Hensley said “My goal was not to focus on the bullying. I think that word is overused and we’ve kind of grown immune to it. So I really wanted to turn it on its head and focus on the positives. Because if we can be kinder, we can eliminate those things maybe not altogether but get kids and even adults thinking in a different way.”

Quest Elementary recently raised $19,500 in their “Quest Fun Run” for new playground equipment. Quest also won an essay contest last year to have a “Buddy Bench” installed on their playground. The Buddy Bench is a place for a student to go if they feel left out. When other students see them sitting there they are responsible for reaching out to them and inviting them to play.

This school consistently gets an A rating each year by the state and has won record numbers of awards in athletics and book smarts on both a state and national level.

Magnet and choice schools: These schools offer non-traditional curriculum while still maintaining high standards for excellence in education.

Charter schools: Viera Charter School 6-8 grade has popular radio, television and drama production classes led by teacher Michael Szabo. These students can be heard on the school’s public address system every morning, leading the Pledge of Allegiance and offering news, sports and weather reports that are school-related. They also broadcast on the school’s in-house radio station WVCS-FM 88.1.

Community Outreach Projects

The people of Viera give back to the community in a variety of creative and successful ways. Every year Viera hosts a “Brave a Shave” event. Male and female volunteers of all ages sign up to have their heads shaved in order to raise money for kids with cancer. The most recent event was held in March 2016 at The Avenue Viera’s Central Park. More than $250,000 was raised by 450 volunteers. In the last four years this event has raised more than one million dollars from 1,900 head shavings.

Viera Pizza’s “Eat My Crust” 5K is another annual event that raises money for Viera High School Athletics, Special Olympics of Brevard and Brevard’s Early Step Program. “We’re touching the lives of infants along with student and special athletes with the monies raised from the race.” said race coordinator Mike Acosta.

Viera Voice’s annual Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival is a popular event that brings in around 2,500 people and features thirty-seven scarecrows put on display and sold in a silent auction. The proceeds are given to Devereux Residential School in Viera for children with emotional challenges and The Children’s Advocacy Center in Suntree, which works to prevent child abuse. “We want to do as much to help local charities as we can. This is why, this year, each business was able to choose its own.”  said Jill Blue-Gaines. “We placed attractions and scarecrows at all the entrances from the outer mall and along walkways so the event was evenly spread out and so attendees never felt crowded, with lots of things to see and do to last the whole day.”

Around Thanksgiving Dan Hancock, founder of the men’s group JustBeCAUSE, organizes “Feast on the 50” which is dinner on the 50-yard line at Viera Regional Park Field, where he coaches. The goal is to raise money to support families by collecting food.

“I knew I wanted to do some kind of donation type of thing. I wanted our kids to have a sense of service. Because I have no idea who to give them to, I wanted to attach it to somebody big and support them.”

“It’s definitely been a good response. The big picture is, you never know whose life you are going to make an impact on, so try to make it positive,” Hancock said.
